How to Reset Your Keyless Entry System

Keyless entry systems have become a popular device for many security systems in life but especially for cars. These key fobs allow you to lock, unlock, and start your car remotely. Unfortunately, as an electronic device, the key fob is prone to malfunctioning. Birmingham Locksmith Pro offers reprogramming, repair, and replacement services for keyless entry systems, but we want to share with you how you can reset your keyless entry system on your own. It is a fairly simple process and only takes about ten minutes. However, timing is crucial if you want to get it right the first time. If you have trouble resetting your system, you can call Birmingham Locksmith Pro to have a professional come by. We are always available with 24-hour emergency service.

How Does A Keyless Entry System Work?

Keyless entry systems work in a similar way as traditional lock and key systems. The underlying mechanism is the same: a unique “key” that fits perfectly into the lock deactivates the security. In a keyless entry system, the “key” is a signal that is sent to the vehicle’s computer. When the computer detects that the signal matches, the respective action is performed (i.e. lock doors, unlock doors, etc.) For the mechanism to work, the key fob and the computer must be programmed to have the same code. There are scenarios in which the codes can become unsynchronized, eliminating your access to the car with that key fob. Luckily, you can reprogram the system to get back on schedule.

Resetting Your Keyless Entry System

Let’s get started.

  1. Get your car keys and the key fob then get in the driver’s seat of your car. Close all of the doors.
  2. Insert the keys into the ignition and turn to the “on” position that starts the electrical system. This is not the position for the radio mode and do not start the engine.
  3. While the key is in the “on” position, press the “lock” button on the key fob and turn the key back to the “off” position. Do this step three times and end the process with the key in the “on” position.
  4. Listen for a lock sound and press the lock button on your key fob within five seconds of hearing that lock sound.
  5. If you have any other key fobs, this is the time to press the lock button on those as well if you want to reprogram them too. Be sure to press the lock button on those within 10 seconds of hearing the lock sound!
  6. Turn off the ignition and test your key fob with your vehicle.

All done!

What If This Process Didn’t Work?

If you followed each step and your key fob is still not working, then try again. If it still does not work, then you might have a bad battery in the key fob. Also, some cars have a more complicated process for reprogramming. You might have to take the car to an authorized car dealer or call a certified locksmith.
